The Famous “…Castrating Bitches…”
T-shirt that I inherited from Rebecca Mattis, ’91, was hot-ish pink, with a high polyester count, & worn to my weekend printing classes as an art studio shirt. If the color ever failed to attract anyone’s attention, the words never did:
The older women in my class looooved it the first time they saw it, the younger women didn’t get it, & the dudes who habitually overtook the print stations and the energy in the class shrunk into the corners, soaked their printing papers, unnerved and silent– for once. I wore that T-shirt every single weekend after that. I still have it, ink-stained and ready, in case anyone around me needs a little reminder.
It occurred to me last year that it was time to reissue this shirt, in honor of our Alma Mater’s 125 years, and in doing so remind us that the fight for women’s rights are far from over and it’s important to fund those rights. Any institution whose mission is the empowerment of women is a direct threat to existing states of power and is therefore subject to financial, social, and other pressures. I do know that unless we financially support Bryn Mawr it may not exist for its 250th year, so when you buy a shirt I will donate between $1.50-$3.00 per shirt to your class year (or to the McBrides). As my mother would say to me in Yiddish, ” mein kint, every nickel counts.”
Shirts will be available fore pre-order before the end of March & start shipping in April, early May— in time for reunion. Oh and you must PRE-order. I am not printing up loads of them and trying to sell them off on Ebay for the next five years. Shirts will come in all four lantern colors plus purple for the McBrides, all will have white printing on them, or so that’s the plan as of now (but I am always open to new ideas unless they sandbag this whole project). Cost? About $18-$20 each with shipping. I am just finishing up the design for the screen itself, which I have updated with a slightly different font. The reason pricing is estimated is because I haven’t started production yet, so final numbers are hard to tell but I promise they won’t be more than stated.
Stay tuned for our Twitter updates and payment options, a Facebook something or other, some kind of PayPal functionality I haven’t quite figured out just yet & watch as I attempt to mangle manage this site entirely through my iPhone.

Yes…I was one of the originators. The first tee shorts were white with black writing. Simple and elegant.
Sharon- That is awesome! Thanks so much for confirming and THANK YOU for being part of creating the shirt that inspired me to seek out Bryn Mawr. I hope you will like the new shirts in lantern colors and the updated fonts. The fonts won’t be too wildly different that the old fonts; i am posting images of them today. Stay tuned.
The writing on the original shirts was hand-lettered in italics. And they were 100% cotton, too.
Yes! I have two of the Centennial ones yet. In calligraphy:
Bryn Mawr College Centennial
1885-1985
100 years of castrating bitches”
Must dig them out for reunion this year…
But I think I need some 125 years ones, too.
OMG, I MUST have one. I also have one of the originals. Think I’ll get one for my daughter, Brynn, too.
Hey, how ’bout a color for social work? Could we get in on it? I love it.
If you need a printer, try Kenny’s Printables. Local Philly biz, lesbian owned and great to work with. I’ve done a few projects with her.
Had one of the originals, need to get a new one!
Thank you! I actually chose a local guy who has supported many of my efforts in the past. He is super-excited to do this shirt.
What’s the color and I will see what we can find.
For the reissue i chose two fonts based on old-school German handwriting. i hope that you will like them.
Um holy shit, Risa. I seriously read the facebook page, then the front page of the blog, and then this page and the whole time was thinking “WHO IS THIS? THIS SOUNDS LIKE RISA.” And I was correct. My life has a huge Risa-shaped hole in it.
I need this shirt. I need to wear it in DC among the Izods and Kate Spades and I need to feel the fear and reverence. You made my day.
Thank you Risa! This made my horrible mood disappear. Sometimes the real world is hard, I still miss BMC. Have to order one soon to wear to reunion!
I am glad that I could help your mood! I think when you see the shirts and finally get to wear one, you will never have a bad mood again.
This is only the beginning of my plan….maybe i can get you a version with a pre-popped collar?
You should seriously post a picture of you in the original. on the Fbook page too!
Marla- what color for social work?
Dig one out and post pics of you wearing it….
ok, these will be either ethically made OR organic cotton- it changes by color and vendor but i tried to stick to my ethics….. And locally printed.
Risa I want one. How can I pre order/pay you?
Risa,
Can you order them in children’s sizes? I think my 5-year-old needs to wear one when she visits Bryn Mawr with me next year.
Sharon
It looked great at reunion!
So…how long until you have shirts with the other slogans?
I still haven’t received mine! What’s the timing on shipment?
